Review & Giveaway: Of Bees and Mist by Erick Setiawan

Merida's parents are void of emotion. She doesn't hear I love you's and she doesn't know what it's like to be loved unconditionally by a parent. She was was raised by her Nurse who unexpectedly is told to leave.

Falling in love with the man of her dreams she begins to feel truly alive. Marrying Daniel seems like a no-brainer. Thinking that her in-laws are the picture-perfect family she has always dreamed of, she is shocked when she finds out that this family is just as dysfunctional as her own. She had no idea she was leaving one hell for another.

I was a little iffy about this book. It was interested and well written but it lacked a certain oomph that I was hoping for.

Giveaway: Wuthering Heights: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

Penguin’s founder Allen Lane started the paperback revolution with that little flippant but dignified Penguin (his secretary came up with the name and he sent another colleague off to the zoo to make sketches).   One year later, 3 million Penguin paperbacks had been sold.  Today, the
Penguin imprint alone has over 4000 books in print.  To learn more about our history, see here and here.

We are hands down the publishing logo most recognized internationally---including the story of Terry Waite, the Anglican clergyman who was held hostage in Beirut.  Six months into his captivity, Waite made friends with his jailer, and although they spoke different languages he managed to tell the jailer he wanted a book.  He drew an oval, and he drew a penguin, and he said, “find me a book that looks like that, and it will be a good book.”  That story says everything about what Penguin stands for around the world.

Penguin is celebrating it's 75th Anniversary and they want you to celebrate too! They are giving one of my readers a copy of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

Considered lurid and shocking by mid-19th-century standards, Wuthering Heights was initially thought to be such a publishing risk that its author, Emily Bronte, was asked to pay some of the publication costs. A somber tale of consuming passions and vengeance played out against the lonely moors of northern England, the book proved to be one of the most enduring classics of English literature.

The turbulent and tempestuous love story of Cathy and Heathcliff spans two generations -- from the time Heathcliff, a strange, course young boy, is brought to live on the Earnshaw's windswept estate, through Cathy's marriage to Edgar Linton and Heathcliff's plans for revenge, to Cathy's death years later and the eventual union of the surviving Earnshaw and Linton heirs.

A masterpiece of imaginative fiction, Wuthering Heightsremains as poignant and compelling today as it was when first published in 1847.

POCKET BOOKS LAUNCHES POCKET AFTER DARK

A NEW ONLINE COMMUNITY CREATED ESPECIALLY FOR ROMANCE AND URBAN FANTASY READERS

New York, New York (July 30th) – Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, has announced the launch of POCKET AFTER DARK (PocketAfterDark.com), a free online community for romance and urban fantasy readers.  Developed by Simon & Schuster Digital, Pocket After Dark will offer access to exclusive content and provide a forum for members to share interests and connect with other readers, authors, and editors on a personal level.

POCKET AFTER DARK will allow members to read, rate, and discuss new romance and urban fantasy books, participate in polls and live chats with bestselling authors, discover new authors and sample material, and connect with fellow readers and fans.  Special features will include access to free books, A Little Tease which offers two free chapters of up to six current titles per month, and a sneak peek from a soon-to-be published book by new and popular authors.  Members will also be able to earn points based on their site activity.

The site also includes the entire catalog of Simon & Schuster’s romance and fantasy books organized around the various sub-genres:  contemporary, historical, paranormal, urban fantasy, and romantic suspense so readers can easily engage with the content and discussions they find most relevant to their interests.

While the site is geared towards reading and discussion, users can buy the books directly from the site or an online retailer of their choice.

“Pocket Books is home to many of today’s premiere romance and urban fantasy authors, and Simon & Schuster Digital remains at the forefront of developing exciting and compelling online content,” said Louise Burke, Pocket Books’ Executive Vice President and Publisher.  “I am thrilled to be a part of this new venture that will unite our authors with their devoted fans.”

“Romance and urban fantasy readers are incredibly active online, and love to talk about their favorite books,” said Lauren McKenna, Pocket Books’ Executive Editor.  “POCKET AFTER DARK wants to be the publishing equivalent of their favorite hangout, where they can spot a publishing ‘VIP,’ bestselling author, or just talk with like-minded fans.”

“We combined free access to great content with all the latest social media functionality to create a virtual book club that serves passionate romance and urban fantasy readers,”  said Ellie Hirschhorn, Simon & Schuster’s Chief Digital Officer.  “Readers and fans can now connect around their favorite authors, characters, and books with others from around the country, rather than limiting discussions to those held in their living rooms.”

The Hydration Station

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Haws. All opinions are 100% mine.

New_hswbottle_hr

I won't drink tap water or water from a drinking fountain. I've been told that it is the same as bottled water, but I can taste a difference. I prefer to drink water that is purified because it tastes the best.  My husband is always telling me that I need to drink more water.  I would never drink water if I had to drink from the tap.  I hate even brushing my teeth with tap water.  It's so gross. I have even been known to put bottled or purified water in my dog's bowl.

The Hydration Station is the perfect system for an office or shopping center. You don't have to touch it and it filters water that you can put right in a reusable bottle or cup. This system eliminates harmful waste like plastic water bottles.  I love how this product looks, it's so nice and clean.  Schools should really look into having a hydration station in every hallway.  You don't have to touch anything to get your water, so that would cut down on a lot of germs.  It has certain components that protect against mold and mildew.  There are so many great things about this product.  Too bad they aren't made for home use.

Wanted: Fat Vampire: A Never Coming of Age Story by Adam Rex

Doug Lee is undead quite by accident—attacked by a desperate vampire, he finds himself cursed with being fat and fifteen forever. When he has no luck finding some goth chick with a vampire fetish, he resorts to sucking the blood of cows under cover of the night. But it's just not the same.

Then he meets the new Indian exchange student and falls for her—hard. Yeah, he wants to bite her, but he also wants to prove himself to her. But like the laws of life, love, and high school, the laws of vampire existence are complicated—it's not as easy as studying Dracula. Especially when the star of Vampire Hunters is hot on your trail in an attempt to boost ratings. . . .

Searing, hilarious, and always unexpected, Fat Vampire is a satirical tour de force from one of the most original writers of fiction today.

I saw this book and I just had to share it with you all. I want to read it so bad! I hope it's as good as I think it will be.

Review & Giveaway: The Jewel of St. Petersburg by Kate Furnivall

Gorgeous Valentina doesn't welcome all of the attention she gets.  Her dream is to help others in nursing, not being handed over in an arranged marriage.

She meets the dashing Jen Friis and her heart immediately belongs to him.  Torn between running away to be with Jen and raise their child that she is carrying and her sister.

Hands down, this is one of the best historical romance books ever written.  I was instantly sucked in and even when I reached the back cover, I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the book was over.

Review & GIveaway: And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper

Husbands who lie and cheat. How should a woman retaliate? For Lacey, this is achieved by sending out a blast email tell all about her husband and his crimes against her heart.

She decides to stay at her family's cabin for some peace and quiet to deal with her current situation. She ends up meeting Monroe who may not be a knight in shining armor but when it comes down to it, he is exactly what Lacey needs.

This is a fun, fluffy book that can be read in one sitting. I'm a sucker for romantic comedies and this book was no exception.

Review: Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love my dogs. They are not pets, they are members of my family. We have been through so much together and I can't imagine my life without them. I love it when I read or hear about someone who loves their dogs as much as I love mine. I feel like Susannah is a kindred spirit.

Susanna teaches her do Puzzle a lot but Puzzle ends up teaching her as well. I found this book to right on when it comes to the love a dog and human can share. Susanna tells her story brilliantly and had me wanting more. Dog lovers everywhere will rejoice when reading this heartwarming book.

Review & Giveaway: The Book of Peach by Penelope J. Stokes

Priscilla (Peach) promises herself that she will never go back to her hometown. The "happily ever after" she was expecting came tumbling down. She's devastated and she keeps going over and over her life trying to figure out where she went off track. During this process, she makes friends and even starts a fling with Charles. While she was busy trying to figure everything out, it seems like everything has fallen into place. Who knew that getting divorced and moving back home could be so inspiring?

I loved this book! Priscilla is extremely strong and I felt like she was right in front of me, making her life better. She's very easy to relate to and by the end of the book, you feel a sense of closure that doesn't always happen in books.

Review: Your Health in Your Hands: Living and Aging Well

Product Description:

This guide to living and aging well, provides details around actions and attitude changes that will affect the quality of your physical health and appearance. Many of the topics discussed will surprise and shock the beginner to the conversation of health and aging as something you can control. Kathy has influenced countless men and women to change their choices and change their lives. The premise behind this book is the body being a closed self healing unit needs to be nourished and it will present health and beauty. The first step, renewing the mind, involves examining lifelong belief about health and how diseases are manifest. Kathy, along with other health care providers and physicians, has looked beyond how genes affect health to how lifestyle affects genes. This work is part of the paradigm shift, (epi) genetics that is happening around the world in reference to the ability that human beings have to control their health. Your Health in Your Hands is a journey; suggesting we must take every action we can to obtain better health. Interesting and informative topics you may not have considered about food choices and recipes in a "how to" cooking section give you the tools you need for healthy lifestyle decisions. The author is always present as the coach, teacher, mentor, and guide but clearly believes YOU are the major key to your better health.

No woman likes the fact that we all must one day grow old. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take care of your body and your mind. Fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable but there are ways to postpone them. I'm under 30 and I already use anti-aging products. Science has come a long way which is great, but the best thing you can do is think about yourself and your what you need to do to be healthy.

I liked how Kathy presented herself as a friend instead of a drill sergeant. She shares her own tips to benefit others in a way that gets you all pumped up. This is a great companion for those who are interested in bettering themselves from the inside out.

Giveaway: Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens

Over the course of his 60 years, Christopher Hitchens has been a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has been both a socialist opposed to the war in Vietnam and a supporter of the U.S. war against Islamic extremism in Iraq. He has been both a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most dangerous places and a legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for alcohol and literature. He is a fervent atheist, raised as a Christian, by a mother whose Jewish heritage was not revealed to him until her suicide.

In other words, Christopher Hitchens contains multitudes. He sees all sides of an argument. And he believes the personal is political.

This is the story of his life, lived large.

Giveaway: Ravens by George Dawes Green

The Boatwrights just won 318 million dollars in the Georgia State lottery. It's going to be the worst day of their lives.

When Shaw McBride and Romeo Zderko pull up at a convenience store off I-95 in Georgia, their only thought is to fix a leaky tire and be on their way again to Florida-away from their dull Ohio tech-support jobs. But this happens to be the store from which a 318,000,000 million dollar Jackpot ticket has just been sold -- and when a pretty clerk accidentally reveals to Shaw the identity of the winning family, he hatches a ferociously audacious scheme: He and Romeo will squeeze the family for half their prize.

That night, he visits the Boatwright home and takes the family hostage, while Romeo patrols the streets nearby, prepared to murder the Boatwrights' loved ones at any sign of resistance. At first, the family offers none. But Shaw's plot depends on maintaining constant fear-merciless, unfaltering terror-and soon, under the pressure, everyone's sanity begins to unravel . . .

At once frightening, comic, and suspenseful, RAVENS is a wholly original and utterly compelling novel from one of our most talented writers.

Entertainment For Less

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of iNetVideo. All opinions are 100% mine.

I don't purchase movies very often but every now and them, a movie will come out that sweeps me off my feet and I just have to have it. Are you wondering what kind of movies can do that to me? The Twilight Saga, of course, The Notebook, Sherlock Holmes, Pink Panther (with Steve Martin) and a few others. When I do buy a movie, I try to save as much money as I can. I have found price differences of ten dollars before. Ten dollars could possibly be enough for you to get another movie. I prefer two over one for movies, music and video games.

iNetVideo.com sells DVD's, HD DVD's, blu-ray movies, video games and cd's. The best thing about this online store is the number of bargains they have. Visit the iNetVideo blog and enter to win a Blue-ray player. They give one away every month!

My husband and I don't have a Blu-ray player yet.  Action, adventure and fantasy movies look completely different in a Blu-ray player.  It's amazing how real they can make a movie look.  Lord Of The Rings and Wolverine were taken to a whole new level.  Now I need to see the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray.

NYPD detective Jacob Kanon is on a tour of Europe's most gorgeous cities. But the sights aren't what draw him--he sees each museum, each cathedral, and each cafe through the eyes of his daughter's killer.

The killing is simply marvelous

Kanon's daughter, Kimmy, and her boyfriend were murdered while on vacation in Rome. Since then, young couples in Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Stockholm have been found dead. Little connects the murders, other than a postcard to the local newspaper that precedes each new victim.

Wish you were here

Now Kanon teams up with the Swedish reporter, Dessie Larsson, who has just received a postcard in Stockholm--and they think they know where the next victims will be. With relentless logic and unstoppable action, The Postcard Killers may be James Patterson's most vivid and compelling thriller yet.

I'm a HUGE James Patterson fan. I haven't pre-ordered The Postcard Killers by James Patterson & Liza Marklund yet. Are you a Patterson fan?
