Review: Secrets on Lake Drive by Tina Martin

Monica and Sean clash at a parent-teacher conference when Monica accuses Sean of being too occupied with making money and chasing women to take a real interest in his son's life. But Sean is no pushover. He knows how to hold his own and deal with Monica, but after the incident at school, he's also come to realize that he can use Monica's devotion to his advantage. He propositions her to move into his home to babysit five-year old Roman for the three months of summer break, offering her a substantial amount of money, hoping that she'll accept. But is babysitting the only reason he's so anxious to get her into his mansion? Monica accepts his offer against her better judgment, knowing the rumors of Sean and his womanizing ways. She tells herself that she's doing this for Roman - that she can avoid her new, sexy, summer boss - his chiseled chest, pretty green eyes and charm that just won't quit. But after only a few weeks, Monica finds it a struggle to keep her eyes off of Sean. Can she handle staying focused on her babysitting gig for three months without being swept off of her feet by Milwaukee's finest? Or is Sean's game too much for the young, conservative teacher to handle? Having been heartbroken in the past, Monica is reluctant to play this dangerous game with a confirmed heartbreaker. But it's what she doesn't know about Sean that she should be concerned about. Sean knows her well - too well, and it's those secrets that have the potential to make her love him or hate him. Secrets On Lake Drive is an emotional story about a woman looking to correct wrongs in her life that could easily be solved by the secrets Sean quietly carries with him. The question is, will he ever care enough to tell her?

Tina paints an intriguing picture with her style of words.  The characters come to life and the plot is intoxicating.  I'm adding Tina to my list of favorite authors.  I know what I'll be getting some of my friends for Christmas!

Review: Aching for Always by Gwyn Cready

RITA Award–winning author Gwyn Cready continues the “sexy fun” (BookPage) of her charming time-travel adventures with a high-spirited tale of a modern-day mapmaker and the eighteenth-century English navy captain she can’t resist.

Ambitious and feisty Josephine “Joss” O’Malley has spent years fighting to keep her mother’s map-making company alive. Just when she finds herself considering taking a risky next step with bad-boy entrepreneur Rogan Reynolds— whose generosity has helped keep the business afloat—Joss meets dark and mysterious Hugh Hawksmoor. Hugh’s deft touch and old-world seduction stir Joss’s desires like a storm at sea, and she has no clue that he has sailed three hundred years into the future to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of her father. Or that she holds the key to a map that will help him undo the destructive changes her father wrought in the past. When Hugh lures Joss into a treacherous journey through time, there’s not a twenty-first-century trick that can save her. But when she applies her own instincts to a course she thought was set, she discovers that the high seas hold some scandalous surprises.

I fell head-over-heels for Hugh in this completely seductive story.  It's imaginative, smart, sexy and a whole lot of fun.  Romance lovers everywhere will rejoice!  Gwyn has done it once again!

Review: Venom (Elemental Assassin, Book 3) by Jennifer Estep

It’s hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most. To the public, I’m Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland’s best barbecue joint. To my friends, I’m the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker—Mab’s right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists. At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I’ll take my chances. Then there’s Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland’s finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I’m a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.

It's amazing how a book can give you an adrenaline rush and sweep you off your feet all at the same time.  Venom takes you on an unbelievable ride, filled with suspense, romance, thrills and more.

Vampire Diaries Board Gam

Vampire Diaries fans can keep the drama going with this board game based on the hit television show. Move your piece around the game board and try to be the last player left who hasn't been turned into a vampire. Features 4 human-to-vampire transformation photo-frames, a replica of Katherine's ring, and a vampire fangs rubber stamper. For 3-4 players. Ages teen to adult. Includes game board, dry erase pad, and 3 dice.

I am going to have to get this for me and Krista to play!  We are both addicted to this show, so we would both probably be pretty good at it.  I like to win though, so hopefully I'll have the upper hand since I was able to watch the last episode and she wasn't.

You Are Beautiful

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Bottega Verde. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am on an all natural kick. I don't want any products that have chemicals in them for many reasons. The first reason is because I have sensitive skin and a lot of products make me break out into little, red itchy bumps. Plus, I don't see how putting unnatural ingredients can be good. Your skin absorbs the products you use and I don't want nasty stuff seeping in my pores.  Why use unnatural products if you don't have to?  It just doesn't make sense to me.

Bottega Verde has all natural beauty products. I would absolutely love to try the Almonds line because I love soft skin and I really like that it will work for people with very dry and dehydrated skin.  It would be nice to use the Olive Oil products too because it provides long-lasting moisture.  I'm no diva, but I do try to take good care of myself and my skin.  I want to use the best products because by doing that, I am saving my skin from unwanted irritants.  Have you tried Bottega Verde?  Make sure you check out their amazing line of products.

I liked True Blood: The Complete Second Season (HBO Series)
a lot more than the first season.  There was more action and the plot was intense.  I'm ready for season 3 now:)

Wardrobe Changes

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Liz Claiborne New York Outlets. All opinions are 100% mine.

My favorite thing about this time of year is the clothes I get to wear. I am a huge fan of sweaters and jackets. I like to bundle up in layers because it gives you a chance to change it up a little. Adding a jacket can make an outfit look completely different. It's great because I don't have a ton of clothes and I like being able to mix and match. I don't have a lot of money to spend on a new wardrobe, so when I shop, I look for really good bargains. Did you know that you can get up to 40% off at Liz Claiborne New York Outlets? They are selling their entire inventory, so you would be sure to find something you like in your price range.

I would love to go and pick out some new jeans, sweaters and turtlenecks.  I could really use a new pair of boots too.  Saving 40% would give me the opportunity to expand the amount of clothes I own drastically.  What about you, do you need some new fall clothes?  Make sure you visit the nearest Liz Claiborne New York Outlet store near you while this sale is going on.  You could walk out looking like a whole new you without having to spend a ton of money.

Review: True Blood: The Complete First Season (HBO Series)

TRUE BLOOD chronicles the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps... where vampires have emerged from the coffin, and no longer need humans for their fix. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, Golden Globe(R)-winner for "True Blood", Academy Award®-winner for “The Piano”) works as a waitress at the rural bar Merlotte's. Though outwardly a typical young woman, she keeps a dangerous secret: she has the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Her situation is further complicated when the bar gets its first vampire patron - 173-year old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer, "Quills") - and the two outsiders are immediately drawn to each other. Delivering the best of what audiences have come to expect from Creator and Executive Producer Alan Ball (writer of Oscar®-winning Best Picture “American Beauty”, creator of the Emmy® Award-winning HBO® series “Six Feet Under”), TRUE BLOOD is a dark and sexy tale that boldly delves into the heart - and the neck - of the Deep South.

Special Features:

  • In Focus: Vampires in America: A mockumentary about vampires in America
  • True Blood Beverage Ads: French and American "Tru Blood" beverage ads
  • Vampire Service Ads: Ads for vampire dating, vampire hotels, and lawyers that service vampires
  • Public Service Announcements: Both pro- and anti-vampire rights
  • Six audio commentaries with the cast and crew, including executive producer and creator Alan Ball, Anna Paquin (Sookie), and Stephen Moyer (Bill)

I know I'm behind the times.  I just finished watching True Blood: The Complete First Season (HBO Series) on Saturday and it's a good show.  Personally, I like Twilight and The Vampire Diaries better, but True Blood is fun way to spend a weekend.

Review: Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin

In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.

Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

I am a HUGE dog-lover.  I will never understand how some people can be so cruel to a helpless animal.  This book made me cry so hard but it also made me smile.  It's amazing how a dog can come into your life and change you just because you took the time to look at them.  My dogs are not pets, they are a member of my family.  I take care of them and they take care of me.  They are my Oogy.  If you are an animal lover, you HAVE to read this amazing story.

Review: Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln's Corpse

On the morning of April 2, 1865, Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, received a telegram from General Robert E. Lee. There is no more time—the Yankees are coming, it warned. Shortly before midnight, Davis boarded a train from Richmond and fled the capital, setting off an intense and thrilling chase in which Union cavalry hunted the Confederate president.

Two weeks later, President Lincoln was assassinated, and the nation was convinced that Davis was involved in the conspiracy that led to the crime. Lincoln's murder, autopsy, and White House funeral transfixed the nation. His final journey began when soldiers placed his corpse aboard a special train that would carry him home on the 1,600-mile trip to Springfield. Along the way, more than a million Americans looked upon their martyr's face, and several million watched the funeral train roll by. It was the largest and most magnificent funeral pageant in American history.

To the Union, Davis was no longer merely a traitor. He became a murderer, a wanted man with a $100,000 bounty on his head. Davis was hunted down and placed in captivity, the beginning of an intense and dramatic odyssey that would transform him into a martyr of the South's Lost Cause.

The saga that began with Manhunt continues with the suspenseful and electrifying Bloody Crimes. James Swanson masterfully weaves together the stories of two fallen leaders as they made their last expeditions through the bloody landscape of a wounded nation.

I enjoyed this book.  I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite's but it certainly held my attention.  James has a way of picking a reader out of the real world and showing them a glimpse of the past.  If you like the synopsis, I'm sure you'll enjoy the book.

Please Stand Back

My favorite job was probably when I worked as part of the event staff at an arena.  Part of my job was crowd control which wasn't always easy.  Especially if was a concert for a boy band.  Making sure that people didn't block the aisle could be difficult at times.

When people were coming in, ready for a show, they would have to make their way through stanchions which helped out a lot when there were big crowds.  Depending on the turnout, using velvet rope might be sufficient.

I can remember one time, I was working a Backstreet Boys concert and I was guarding their tour bus.  When the concert was over, girls came over to where the bus was and if there hadn't been barricades, I don't know what we would have done.

Review: Days of our Lives 45 Years: A Celebration in Photos

The official anniversary celebration book of the beloved soap that draws 3 million daily viewers

Days of our Lives 45th Anniversary Treasury is an unprecedented photographic journey behind the scenes of the longest running scripted program in NBC's history, Days of our Lives. Using never-before-seen images of cast, crew, sets and styling from 1965 to 2010, the proverbial "4th wall" is broken for an extraordinary look inside the studio, including hair and make-up routines, wardrobe fittings, technical preparation, and taping of an episode, all until the director says "it's a wrap!" Additionally, original pages from scripts, archived photos and some of the earliest set designs are combined with contemporary elements to vividly demonstrate how Days of our Lives's past has truly set the stage for current and future success.

Days of our Lives first premiered in 1965 and expanded to a one-hour 10 years later. The show's success derives from its commitment to excellence in storytelling-supported by a diverse ensemble of performers. Days of our Lives is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television.

I can remember rushing home from school so that I wouldn't miss too much of Days of our Lives with my mom. As soon as I saw that this book was coming out, I knew I had to have it. As soon as it came in the mail, I showed it to my mom and her eyes lit up like she was a kid in a candy store. We were both amazed at how great the pictures were and it was fun to look back at something that reminded me of how great it was to be a kid. This would be the perfect gift for the soap-opera-lover in your life.

Review: Dismissed with Prejudice by Fletcher Cockrell

In “Dismissed with Prejudice.” the power of the purse takes over the Louisiana State basketball team and the corruption escalates to violence, threats and murder. The scandal grows until it involves a multi-million-dollar head coach, the state government and even the mafia. When an assistant coach is forced to become the scapegoat, a small-town lawyer can’t resist investigating. The fierce legal battle that follows exposes just how influential money can be in the crooked politics of college sports.

Money has the ability to do good things but all too often it sparks evil.  Dismissed with Prejudice is an interesting, thought-provoking read that is perfect for readers who love a good thriller.  I would give this book four out of five stars.

Review: 12 Smart Things to Do When the Booze and Drugs Are Gone: Choosing Emotional Sobriety through Self-Awareness and Right Action

Whether it's called 'dry drunk' or 'white knuckle sobriety,' it's that stage in recovery when we realize that 'putting the plug in the jug' isn't enough. The next step is taking responsibility for the emotional immaturity that fuels our addictive personality and has a tremendous impact on ourselves and others.

In
12 Smart Things to Do When the Booze and Drugs Are Gone, Allen Berger, Ph.D., draws on the teachings of Bill W. and psychotherapy pioneers to offer twelve hallmarks of emotional sobriety that, when practiced, give people the confidence to be accountable for their behavior, ask for what they want and need, and grow and develop a deeper trust in the process of life. These 'smart things' include:
  • Understanding who you are and what's important to you
  • Learning not to take others' reactions personally
  • Trusting your own inner compass
  • Taking responsibility for your reactions to problematic situations
It is in these practices that we find release from what Bill W. described as an 'absolute dependency' on people or circumstances, and develop the tools to find prestige, security, and belonging within.

Review: Out of the Transylvania Night by Aura Imbarus

In an epic tale of identity and the indomitable human spirit, OUT OF THE TRANSYLVANIA NIGHT explores tyranny, freedom, love, success, and the price paid for misaligned dreams. An incredibly powerful memoir.

'I'd grown up in the land of TRANSYLVANIA, homeland to Dracula, Vlad the Impaler, and, worse, the Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu—who turned Romania into a land of gray-clad zombies who never dared to show their individuality, and where neighbors became informants, and the Securitate made people disappear. Daylight empowered the regime to encircle us like starved wolves, and so night had always been the time to steal a bit of freedom. As if bred into our Transylvanian blood, we were like vampires who came to life after sundown. I buried the family heirloom jewels, tucked the flag into my sweater and left my outpost to join the action . . . tonight Ceausescu would die!'

Known for using stand-ins to pose for him, Aura doubts if it was even Ceausescu himself who was killed that night. Nevertheless, when her countrymen topple one of the most draconian regimes in the Soviet bloc, Aura Imbarus tells herself that life post-revolution will be different. But little in the country changes. With two pieces of luggage and a powerful dream, Aura and her new husband flee to America. Through sacrifice and hard work, the couple acquire a home, cars, and travel—but trying to be Americans is much more complicated than they expect. More difficulties set in: the stock market crash takes their savings, house, and cars; thieves steal three centuries' worth of heirloom jewels; and Aura's beloved mother dies.

Aura's marriage crumbles under the stress. Devastated, she asks herself, 'How much of one's life is owed to others?' Tested even further by the vagaries of fate, Aura discovers a startling truth about striking a balance between one's dreams and the sacrifices and compromises that allow for serenity, selfhood, and lasting love. More resolution comes when in 2010, Ceausescu's body is exhumed to answer questions of a cover-up, and Aura can finally lay to rest the haunting mysteries of her past.

This is a heart-wrenching book that will invoke different emotions from one sentence to the next.  I was amazed at how deeply I fell into this book and it didn't take long for me to get hooked.  Aura's a strong woman who's story can teach all who read it.  I would give this book five out of five stars.
